Peugeot launches ground-loading van conversion

On the opening day of the CV Operators Show Peugeot has unveiled a modular body system for its Boxer range called the Roadload U-tail.

The system is based on a standard 3.5t Boxer chassis which is modified to enable it to accommodate the removable rear load module that lowers to the ground within the vehicle's footprint. This not only reduces the space needed for loading and unloading but also eliminates the need for a rear tail lift or loading ramps.

As the Boxer is front-wheel drive the Roadload U-tail can carries its load between two side frames and offers almost 1.5t of carrying capacity. Hydraulically-operated lifting arms enable boxes to be exchanged and cameras provide the driver with alignment assistance.

SED 365Raising and lowering the body takes about five seconds and the vehicle does not need to be moved during the operation.

The payload sits lower than on conventional 3.5t van, reducing the overall height and the air resistance as well as providing a smoother ride (helped by semi-air suspension on the rear wheels).

The standard box body provides over 11m3 of carrying space, can accommodate payloads of up to 1.1t and has vertical sides with an unobstructed rectangular floor. A flat-bed tipper body is also being developed.

This system enables bodies to be pre-configured to a company's needs (such as a mobile workshop, for small plant deliveries or a tipper) and picked up as and when needed. Because the vehicle remains below 3.5t that there is no need for a tachograph, an operator's license or a vocational driving licence although if these are not an issue a 4t GVW option is available.
